Cloggers wear many types of different clothing, from normal daily wear to brightly colored costumes; sequins have sprung up everywhere! The growing popularity of clogging can be seen by the increased number of dancers attending workshops, competitions, and recreation outlets everywhere.  Today clogging has risen to a whole new level with the introduction of clogging groups to the television show “America’s Got Talent”. Clogging is alive and well and continues to bring joy into the hearts of its dancers and audiences around the world!

Clogging is a truly American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains and now enjoys widespread popularity through-out the United States and around the world. The word “clog” comes from the Gaelic, and means “time”. Clogging is a dance that is done in time with the music – to the downbeat usually with the heel keeping rhythm.

Many people who’ve never seen clog dancing up close are under the impression that cloggers wear wooden shoes. NOT TRUE! Cloggers wear normal leather-soled dance shoes with two sets of extra-loud steel taps (“jingle taps”) attached to the bottom of the shoes. Each tap is actually a loosely joined sandwich of two metal plates, which strike each other with each step. Most of the sound produced by these jingle taps is thus generated by the two pieces of steel striking each other, rather than just by the bottom pieces striking the floor.

Clogging today is less impromptu and more complicated than the simple rhythmic dance begun by our ancestors. New influences are creeping into the dance because of popular culture. Tap dancing, Canadian Step Dancing, Irish Hard shoe and even street dancing and hip-hop influences are entering the style of steps and dances performed by cloggers today.
